I’m so excited for the opportunity this fabulous author has provided to highlight an EXCLUSIVE Q&A for my blog site. Thank you Juliette Cross! And a big shoutout to Riki Cleveland from Entangled Publishing for making this happen.
As a longtime fangirl of the paranormal/fantasy genre (especially of the dark variety) with sexy heroes and heroines this new series from Juliette Cross is a standout. I love her creative writing with the exciting storylines full of heart-stopping danger and suspense, steamy romance, unforgettable complex characters and the peek of stories to come.
The first story featured a hardened fallen angel turned demon, Dommiel and the remarkable Anya, a fierce Angel warrior protecting the innocences of the human world. Romantic entanglements between demons and angels are a no no in this world created by Juliette but there’s no denying the connection between Dommiel and Anya.
What transpires is everything you want in a swoon-worthy romance suspense regardless of the genre. But if you are a fan of dark fantasies this is a not-to-be-missed story. I could go on and on about this story, the new series and Juliette’s spectacular writing but that’s not why you have graced me with your reading presence, so without further expounding here are the exclusive answers to my questions!
Q&A for DARKEST HEART author Juliette Cross
1. Usually paranormals have the ability to heal from physical injuries. What inspired you to write a hero with not only one but two physical imperfections?
Hi, Gin! Thank you for having me on your blog. Well, to be honest, Dommiel’s character transforms somewhat in the prequel series first, The Vessel Trilogy. He begins as the hedonistic high demon lord of New Orleans. I knew when writing book 2 of that trilogy that he would have his own story. I could already see he was becoming a unique character who I’d want to explore once he’d been wounded body and soul. The physical imperfections only emphasize that he is flawed, and he blatantly bears it to the world without a care. But they also mirror the wounds on his heart and soul. I liked having an obviously “wounded” anti-hero, in every aspect.
2. Why did you choose to take one of Dommiel’s eyes and not have a fake one created like his arm?
I wanted part of him to still be “ugly” and unhealed or not “fixed.” The arm is necessary because he needs the use of his arm to defend himself in this apocalyptic world. He doesn’t care what he looks like anymore, not like he did when he was a high demon. Now, his motto is exactly what is engraved on his Zippo lighter—“To thine own self be f**king true.” And he doesn’t give a damn what anyone else thinks or feels about him. However, there is a moment in the book when he flinches away when Anya pulls off his patch. This is because she has become important to him, and what she thinks IS important.
3. Was Dommiel’s demon’s unusual eye color due to the twist at end of his retained powers as an archangel?
Yes. Partly. I won’t spoil anymore for readers who want to read for themselves. Lol.
4. Dommiel was redeemed at the end of the story. Is he still a demon?
Yes, he is. He made a mistake which cast him out and has spent centuries as a hedonistic, self-serving creature. Dommiel is now redeemed and no longer belongs in hell and probably more so in heaven, but he’d never choose either. Earth, in the middle, suits him fine, especially with Anya at his side. And that’s really where he belongs.
5. Anya seemed to only care about her duties as an angel. Was there a particular reason you wrote Anya as a solitary character?
Yes. Anya is a true angel in the sense that she is a creature of loyalty and service. She is a guardian and a warrior, devoted to her duties and untouched by temptation. Until Dommiel. This is because they are yin and yang, the perfect halves of a whole, perfectly matched.
6. Will Anya and Dommiel’s story continue in future books?
They will be in future books, but not as the MCs.
7. You have so many new characters for the next story in the series. Who will be next?
Yay! I’m so glad you asked. HARDEST FALL is the next book to be released in December. This one is the story of the charming demon hunter Xander and the weapons maker, Bone. It’s a fun and interesting ride.
8. I am particularly fascinated by Bone. Was the character always destined to be a female?
Yes, definitely. I loved the idea of the most badass blade smith and weapons maker in the apocalypse to be female. I also wanted her to have an unusual, hard name that one might think to be for a man. I can’t wait for readers to get to know her better in HARDEST FALL.
9. Lisabette is a terrific villain. Will she continue in the series?
10. Do you have a tentative date for release of the next story in the series?
HARDEST FALL is definitely set for release on December 17, 2018. I hope readers will stay tuned for the next installment in the DOMINION series.
Thank you again for having me!
