๐„๐—๐‚๐„๐‘๐๐“:

The sound of metal clanking against the tabletop draws my focus to the space between Wyatt and my plates. It takes my mind a second to catch up to the key now lying there, and when I pick it up and realize that itโ€™s to Wyattโ€™s apartmentโ€”the one he just moved into with Whiskeyโ€”I promptly set it back down and slide it in Wyattโ€™s direction.

โ€œReally? A pity key?โ€ My pulse now beats from irritability. But before I can push Wyatt out of my way so I can exit the booth, he takes my hand and unfurls my fingers, pressing the key in my palm, holding it in place with his thumb until I glance up and meet his gaze.

โ€œBelieve me, there is zero pity in this gesture. I planned on asking you to move in with me tonight after a lovely dinner with your family. Itโ€™s been in the works for a week; I just needed to make sure Whiskey was totally able to swing a one-bedroom on his own. Heโ€™s moving to the unit downstairs next weekend. But since I seem to have veered onto the worldโ€™s unluckiest timeline, Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ve changed your mind, soโ€”โ€

โ€œWyatt,โ€ I interrupt.

His lips fall shut, but the top one twitches a little as our eyes meet. Itโ€™s a nervous tick Iโ€™ve learned he has, like itโ€™s hard for him to hold in his thoughts patiently.

โ€œIโ€™d love to live with you,โ€ I say, waiting for his nostrils to flex with his exhale. I know when heโ€™s holding his breath.

โ€œWait a second, shouldnโ€™t you have asked me?โ€ I can tell from my fatherโ€™s tone that heโ€™s joking, but Iโ€™m pretty sure Wyattโ€™s had enough of Reed Johnsonโ€™s ribbing for one night.

โ€œNo, Dad. Because heโ€™s not asking you to move in. Just me.โ€ I wave my dad off, and he chuckles before immediately muttering something about needing to have a new โ€œtalkโ€ with Wyatt.

โ€œYeah?โ€ Wyatt says softly in the meantime, a crooked grin playing at his lips.

I nod as my eyes squint under the pressure of my growing smile.

โ€œYeah. Iโ€™ll be your roomie.โ€ I close the tiny distance between us and push up enough to press a soft kiss to his lips.

โ€œOn one condition,โ€ I add.

His eyes flicker for a beat, and his head tilts with caution.

โ€œYou have to tell Tasha,โ€ I say.

My best friend. Who is tougher than most of the linemen who are gunning for Wyatt on the field. Who does not like the idea of living alone. And who is going to lose her ever-loving mind when she finds out sheโ€™s going to have to find someone else to take over my half of our split floorplan.

Wyattโ€™s eyes remain wide open, perhaps a little frozen in fear. Without breaking our gaze, he feels for my hand and promptly pulls the key free of my grasp. Then, leaning to the side, he pushes it back into his pocket and utters, โ€œNever mind .โ€

Blurb:

I didn’t follow Wyatt Stone to college, I followed my heart. He just happened to be there.

Against the odds, our love has only grown stronger over the last three years. Now Wyatt’s entering his final college football season, only a few months away from the pro draft this spring. And despite how hard I tried to deny living the same love story as my parents, it seems I’m destined to become the wife of an NFL quarterback. Forever the cheerleader. Truthfully? I can’t imagine life turning out any other way.

However, dreams are temporary. And sometimes, it’s the things that happen when we’re wide awake that forge our stories. Our love is about to face its toughest test yet, and as badly as my heart wants to hold on to what we were, I’m not so sure it’s possible. More importantly, I’m not certain it’s the right choice for either of us.

Now, Wyatt . . . he’s a lot like my father. He’s stubborn. What we’re facing is a whole lot heavier than being down by a touchdown with only seconds to go. But Wyatt doesn’t back down from a fight. It’s just that this one might not win him the game in the end.
