Excerpt:
Blaise Hughes might be the boss, but he wasnโt going to also control who I loved. Noa had been the one thing that wasnโt controlled within the family. She hadnโt been something I had to share. Fit into the darkness of our world. Being told that I couldnโt have the one person who could calm me, make me forget the other shit, wasnโt working for me.
I was glad I hadnโt admitted to Bane that this hadnโt been my first time to go check on her. If he knew Iโd been four other times this month, then heโd really freak the hell out. I just hadnโt been seen or had to kill anyone the other times. Most of those visits, sheโd been asleep and Iโd sat and watched her. It had given me peace.
โIโm not worried about Blaise,โ I told him.
His head snapped around, and he looked at me. โYou should be.โ
โDidnโt Sebastian Shepherd take his woman and run off with her? Sheโd been off limits too, and Blaise didnโt kill him.โ
Sebastian was part of the Georgia branch, and when heโd broken command, it had spread through the family. Heโd also lived and was engaged to the woman now.
โYouโre not a goddamn Shepherd,โ Bane hissed. โOther than the Hugheses, the Shepherds are the oldest line in the family. His lineage saved him. That and his brother is a psychopath. One Blaise didnโt want to kill too. Because if heโd killed Sebastian, heโd have had to kill Thatcher. The deranged son of a bitch would have burned them all to the ground in Ocala if something had happened to Sebastian. THIS,โ he held out his hands. โIs a completely different situation. You donโt have a lethal psycho brother that is indispensable to Blaise Hughes.โ
There was truth to that, but I was still holding onto the fact that I would be allowed to have Noa and live.
โIs she worth losing your life over?โ Bane demanded.
I stared at him only a moment before responding honestly.
โShe is my life.โ
Baneโs shoulders rose and fell as he took a deep breath and ran his hand through his hair.
โAlright then. What is it you want me to do?โ
A grin tugged at the corners of my mouth, but I didnโt dare give in and smile. Bane might have a change of heart if I pissed him off. And I did need his help.
โCover for me. I need to go back and see her. Talk to her. Sheโs hurting, and Iโm the cause of it. I canโt allow it to continue.โ
Baneโs brows drew together. โYou want to tell her what the f*ck is going on?โ
โNot exactly. I just need her to knowโฆ I need her to wait for me. To know that I love her.โ
The scowl on his face said he didnโt like this idea. โFine. Just donโt get us both killed.โ
