She tries to walk away, but before she can, I grip her hand.
“Not happening, Sweetness.” I pull her back to me. “I’m no babysitter. I’m here because I want to be.”
Dancing is not my favorite thing. I prefer dancing in private, the horizontal kind of dancing, where you only need a partner and no spectators, and music is completely optional. But she likes to dance, and at the moment, I would do anything to lift the sadness from her eyes.
I wrap my arm around her. “Stay close.” I head for the stairs.
She peeks up at me, her eyes wide. “Are we leaving already?”
Would she leave if I asked her to?
I stop in my tracks, running my thumb across her jaw, wanting more than anything to kiss those pouty lips. “No, beautiful, we’re going to dance.”
The smile taking over her face makes my heart jump.
“Really? You’ll dance with me?”
I chuckle. “You might not call it dancing, but I’ll try my best.”
On her tip-toes, she wraps her arms around my neck, giving me a quick hug and a kiss on the cheek, scorching my skin. “Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me yet.”
