Rule #1: Never fall for a hockey player. So why does my dating coachâwho also happens to play hockeyâmake me want to break every rule Iâve set?
Neesha
It starts with one conversation with a strangerâŚand suddenly, everything changes.
He wonât tell me what he does for a living, and maybe that should be a red flag. But after the hardest year of my life, my new neighbor feels like a lifelineâcalm, capable, and always there when I need him. When he offers to be my dating coach, I tell myself itâs harmless. That he just wants to help.
But behind that cinnamon roll smile, heâs hiding somethingâand Iâm starting to fall for him anyway.
I told myself we were just friends.
So why am I dreaming about kissing the one man I swore Iâd never fall for?Lucian
Keeping my hockey identity secret was supposed to be temporaryâjust long enough to figure out my next move with the girl next door.
Thereâs just one problem: sheâs sworn off hockey players for good.
She asked me to help her fall for someone else and be her dating coach.
But Iâm the one falling now.
And when she finds out who I really am, I might lose the only woman whoâs ever made me want something more than the game.
I stopped pretending it was a fake date a long time ago.
But when our fun leads to feelings? Thatâs the icing on the cake.Tropes in The Icing on the Cake

EXCERPT:
âYou need practice dating. I could help.â He shrugs. âNo pressure. No commitment. Just proving itâs possible to have a good time with a friend.â
A friendâsomeone safe and harmless to my heart.
I stare at him. âYouâre joking, right?â
âI wouldnât joke about this. We could even go to a public place together if that makes you feel safer.â
Most guys would be focused on convincing me theyâre fun or interesting, but Lucianâs defense is that heâs trustworthy.
And thatâs my issue.
âThink about it,â he begins, not pressuring me at all. âYou already know where I live. And with me, what you see is what you getâeven when Iâm sweaty and covered in sawdustâso thereâs nowhere to go but up.â
I canât tell him that seeing him sweaty and covered in sawdust was actually incredibly attractive.
I blink, stunned that heâs actually serious about this proposal. âDoes this mean youâre my dating coach?â
âIf you want me to be,â he says, studying my face. âThough I have to ask what exactly you think you need to practiceâbecause from where Iâm standing, you seem to have the basics covered.â
I let out a nervous laugh. âAre you kidding? I can barely string two coherent sentences together. Case in point: âHi-hoâ was my greeting to you. No one wants to date the Seven Dwarfs.â
He tilts his head, considering this. âI donât know. Snow White seemed pretty happy with them. And for the record, your âHi-hoâ was actually kind of cute.â
âWell, I feel like Iâve forgotten how to make conversation that doesnât revolve around cupcake orders,â I admit. âBesides, you probably have women lining up to go out with you.â
âNot really,â he says quietly, before looking back at me. âYou want to know what dating a good man looks like? I could show you.â
My pulse skips a beat. âShow me how?â
âWell, weâre alone. Weâve got time now.â He pauses. âWhat if I gave you a quick demonstration, just so you know what to expect?â
Something flutters in my stomach. âA demonstration?â
âJust the basics. How a guy should treat you, what good conversation feels like, how to read the signals. Think of it as a preview of coming attractions.â
This is definitely not what my friends had in mind when they said to flirt with Lucian.
Or maybe it is.
âOkay,â I say before I think better of it. âShow me.â
He catches my gaze while my heart dives off a cliff.
âIf this were a date,â he says, âthe first thing Iâd do is make sure you felt comfortable. That starts with eye contact.â
His gaze remains on mine, never wavering. âMost people are afraid to really look at someone, but eye contact is everything. It shows youâre present, that youâre interested in the person, not just waiting for your turn to talk.â
I find myself caught in his impossibly blue eyes, my heart beating wildly in my chest.
âThen, if the moment feels rightâŚâ He reaches toward me, his fingers brushing mine. âSmall touches. Like this.â
I almost canât breathe as he gently takes one of my hands.
âMost people rush through moments like these,â he says, his voice low. âBut the small touches matter. They tell you everything.â
âLike what?â
âLike whether someoneâs patient or impulsive.â His thumb starts stroking slowly over my skin. âOr whether theyâre paying attention to how you respond.â
I swallow hard, failing to hide that Iâm totally entranced by this.
âWhat else?â I ask, not even caring if this is real or not. Iâm here to practiceâto master the art of whatever this is between us.
He moves closer still. âProximity,â he murmurs. âLetting someone into your space. Reading their response. And not moving away.â
Heâs closer than ever now, and for one wild moment, I see him differentlyânot like someone Iâm practicing with, but someone Iâd actually want this to be real with.
âAnd then?â I ask, my voice barely audible.
His eyes graze down my face for just a second. The corner of his mouth quirks up. âAnd thenâŚyou always leave them wanting more.â
