After dinner, we settled into what had become our evening routine—me on the couch, Kane in the armchair across from me, the coffee table between us serving as our gaming surface. Tonight it was poker, and when we finally showed our hands, Kane stared at my cards for a long moment before letting out a slow breath.
“Full house,” I said pleasantly. “Queens over sevens.”
His flush had been good. Just not good enough.
Kane leaned back in his chair. “So. You won. What do you want?”
I held his gaze and let the moment stretch, savoring the power of it. Kane’s jaw was tight. He didn’t like not being in control, that much was obvious.
“Stand up,” I said.
Kane’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he rose from the chair in one fluid motion.
“Take off your shirt.”
Kane reached back and pulled his t-shirt over his head. I let my eyes wander over his bare chest. Toned muscle, a scattering of dark hair, the defined lines of his abs disappearing into his jeans.
“Now get on your knees,” I said, lifting my gaze to his, “and crawl to me.”
Kane’s expression shifted. The playfulness disappeared, replaced by something darker. “Charlotte.”
“I won.” I kept my voice light, teasing. “Fair’s fair. Unless you’re backing out and reneging on a challenge?”
He held my gaze for a long moment in a silent battle of wills. Then slowly, deliberately, Kane lowered himself to his knees.
Oh, fuck. The sight of him like that—this powerful, dominant man kneeling on the floor because I’d asked him to—sent a rush of heat flooding through me. My thighs clenched involuntarily.
He crawled toward me. Slow and predatory. His eyes never left mine, and there was something in them that made my breath catch. Hunger, yes. But also a promise. Definitely a warning, too.
You might be in control now, that look said. But you won’t be for long.
