“I remember everything, Songbird. There’s not a moment or an inch of you I don’t remember.”
I can hardly breathe, locked in Landry’s heated gaze. He’s been so angry. I’d lost hope I’d ever get a glimpse of the boy I knew. I’m wholly thrown off by his honesty. I came ready to fight or beg him to listen, give me a chance to explain—apologize. I wasn’t prepared to drop my walls and revel in echoes of our young love I’ve yet to find with anyone else or even want to experience again.
“I haven’t forgotten,” I whisper in the space between us that grows smaller by the second as my heart beats ever faster, thumping to find its other half.
He blinks. His back straightens. The moment is broken. He directs me on what to do with prepping the burger fixins as he grills the patties and cooks the fries.
I wallow in the reprieve, needing the time to regroup as we settle in the quiet peace of working side by side.
He may be mad, but he doesn’t hate me. He wouldn’t feed me if he hated me. He’d send me away like he did… “So, you and Ruby?” I leave the question hanging, not sure how to ask and pretty sure I don’t want to know the answer. I ask anyway, digging in the wound that won’t heal, pouring in salt and vinegar and lancing it just in case it’s not painful enough.
“I’m a free man, Taylor. You left me a long time ago.” There’s no bite in his tone. He’s stating fact, resolute in his certainty that I left him.
“I didn’t leave you by choice,” I whisper to his back.
