Excerpt:
βHey, give me your phone,β he says smoothly.
I raise an eyebrow at him. βUm, what for? You can reach me at my office number. I know you have that, or you can get it from your agent.β
βYour phone, princess,β he repeats with a teasing grin. βHand it to me.β
βBrody, seriously, why?β I ask, even though Iβm already pulling my phone out of my bag. βIf I need to get in touch with youββ
βThis isnβt about business,β he cuts in. He takes the phone from my palm and holds it up to my face to unlock it, then taps the glass quickly. I look down and see Brody listed as a contact. He presses call, waiting for his phone to buzz before handing mine back to me.
βThere. Now you have my direct number,β he says firmly. βI donβt care if itβs three am and you have a craving for ice cream, if you feel sick, or if you just need someone to talk to, I want you to call me. Promise me, Ellis.β
I hold my phone in my hand, staring at this man, wondering why he cares so much.
βOkay, Brody. I promise,β I say softly.
βFantastic,β he says, winking. βGood night, princess,β he says, reaching out to give my arm a squeeze. βGet some rest, yeah?β
βIβll try. And hey, thank you again for going with me.β I smile at him, sincerely.
βIt was an honor and a pleasure.β He nods.
βNight, Brody.β
I step out of the truck and walk through the glass doors of my building, giving a quick wave to my doorman as I walk to the private elevator to my floor.
When I step into my penthouse, I donβt feel the same uncertainty Iβve felt for the last few weeks. I walk over to the windows and look out over the Manhattan skyline.
For the first time, I gently rest my palm over my belly.
A fierce smile spreads across my face as the memory of the fast little heartbeat echoes in my mind.
Thump-thump. Thump-thump.
Dylan Boone thought he was leaving me all alone to handle this pregnancy, but he underestimated my reaction. Iβm going to bring this baby into the world and shower them with an enormous amount of love, and I will protect them with everything I have, while creating a beautiful life for us on my own terms.
BLURB:
Ellis Renwick and I are barely more than acquaintancesβconnected only by mutual friends and the endorsement deal I signed with her company. Her baby isnβt mine, and minding my own business should be easy.
But when the babyβs father walks away, I step up. Raised by a single mom, I know the weight Ellis is about to carry, and there is no way Iβm letting her do it alone. But somewhere between midnight cravings, stolen kisses, and tiny heartbeats, the woman behind my endorsement deal becomes my whole world. Now Iβm falling hopelessly in love with a future that was never meant to be mine.
When her father discovers Iβm not the biological dad, he wants to expose the ex publicly, threatening to shatter the quiet haven Ellis and I have built. He wants justice from a ghost. But they’ve become mine to protect.
What her dad doesnβt understand is that her ex walked away β¦
But I never will.
