Excerpt:

Heath was at the kitchen counter, spoon in hand, tasting my casserole. Heโ€™d rolled his sleeves up to his elbows. That worked better and made him look less pompous for a Saturday.

He straightened up when he saw me and smiled sheepishly. Oh goodnessโ€”this six-foot-two hunk could do โ€œsheepish.โ€ That was adorable, in a very handsome way.

Crap. I have to get myself together.

โ€œCaught in the act. This is delicious. Youโ€™re an excellent chef.โ€

I loved getting compliments from him.

โ€œDid you go out shopping for the ingredients? Do I have to reimburse you?โ€

โ€œNo, you had all of this in the fridge.โ€

He looked down and then back up at me. โ€œYou whipped this up with what we had here?โ€

โ€œYeah. Your pantry isnโ€™t badly stocked. You have dry goods and such, and there was chicken in the freezer. It all came together easy.โ€ I took out my phone. โ€œUm, I managed to only clean part of the house today. It took me a while to figure out where everything was. I do need more supplies.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right. I didnโ€™t think about that.โ€

โ€œI made a list on my phone. Is it okay if we go through it?โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€

I went to the other side of the island next to him and set my phone between us. โ€œThis is a list of everything Iโ€™ll need. I can buy this when Iโ€™m back on Monday.โ€

โ€œNo, donโ€™t bother. Iโ€™ll order everything to be delivered. No need for you to haul all this stuff.โ€

โ€œThat would be great, thanks.โ€ I scrolled down a bit. โ€œThis is my schedule of what I plan to clean every day, which are the most frequented areas. Iโ€™ll alternate days for the other rooms. And I wanted to make a menu for next week, but Iโ€™m still waiting on you to tell me your favorites.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll message you with all that info,โ€ he assured me.

He smelled so good. It was intoxicating. We had to stand close to review the list, and now it would feel awkward to step away.

I scrolled farther down the list. โ€œI also need the contact information of all the companies you use.โ€ Iโ€™d mentioned gardening, the pool cleaner, and anything else I could think of, and left a blank space next to each for their phone numbers and such.

โ€œDamn. You thought of everything, huh? I donโ€™t have all of that information.โ€

โ€œWho does? Iโ€™ll just talk to them.โ€

โ€œI only have a company for the pool.โ€

โ€œNot the garden?โ€

โ€œNo, I havenโ€™t found a gardener who Iโ€™ve liked. I just Google companies every time I need something done.โ€

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll find you a new one. A good one.โ€

Heath looked down at me. Oh, I was definitely far too close to this man. It was good that I was petite; otherwise, weโ€™d be in kissing distance.

Not good, Melody. You need this job.

Blurb:

I run a global security company with my brothers and negotiate high-stakes deals without breaking a sweat.

But my daughter deciding she suddenly hates every outfit in her closet five minutes before school? That brings me to my knees every time.

Honestly, being a CEO is easier than being a single dad.

Thatโ€™s why I have rules. Routines. Structure. My life runs a whole lot smoother when everything stays organized and under control.

Then my maintenance company bails on me again, and my house descends into complete chaos. Hiring help goes from unnecessary to essential.

Which is how Melody crashes into my carefully ordered life.

Suddenly, my daughter wants to cook with Melody every evening and runs to her for advice about dresses and hair clips. And I canโ€™t stop thinking about the beautiful woman dancing through my kitchen like she already belongs in our lives.

She makes me want things I stopped believing I deserved a long time ago.

But after losing my wife, I swore Iโ€™d never give anyone the power to destroy me again.

Because if I let Melody become part of our lives, losing her would hurt not only meโ€”but my daughter too.

The problem is, every time Melody smiles at me, I want to bend every rule Iโ€™ve spent years living by.
