Speaking of games. “Maybe I could fake date someone and make him jealous.” I waggle my eyebrows.
Edward does not smile. “I have never seen Austin jealous.”
“It could help him see what he’s missing.” It also happens to be Phase 2 in Carina Arena’s Girl, Get Your Man!
Edward is clearly unimpressed, but as always, he listens patiently. “Don’t those stories always end with the fakers falling in love?”
“My story won’t.”
His eyes narrow the way they do when he encounters a new concept in an old dictionary. He doesn’t speak. He only studies me like he’s gathering information, processing.
“That’s a good idea,” he finally says. “Do it. Pick a nice young man, closer to your age. What about Preston Howard?”
My chin pulls back, and I feel like somehow he’s turned the tables on my plan. “I was thinking about Levi.”
“That would not end well.”
“I think it’s perfect, and I have a head start. He’s already interested in going out with me. He said as much tonight.”
“Don’t fake date Levi.”
“You’re right.” I arch a brow defiantly. “I’ll date him for real. Then we’ll see who’s a jealous teenager.”
“I don’t support this.” I watch as he passes through the door.
“Is that your final word, Coach?”
He walks down the steps, and when he reaches the bottom, he turns to me once more. “If I were your coach, I’d tell you not to forget your worth. No matter what happens.”
My lips tighten, and he continues down the steps leading to the wide path lining the bay that will take him all the way back to his house.
I turn, climbing the short flight of steps that will take me inside and up to my bedroom alone.
