✨EXCERPT: THE BOURBON BETRAYAL by DK Marie releasing October 20th!
#PreOrderNow
I pour two glasses of Blackstone fifteen-year before I turn around.
Let him taste what he tried to steal.
He lifts the glass and I watch him take the first sip. His eyes close for just a second.
I watch him swallow, the bob of his Adam’s apple in his strong throat. I can’t look away.
“Did you dress up for me?” he asks.
I wore this to make him look. I didn’t think about what it would feel like to have him actually looking. I miscalculated.
“Not a chance in hell,” I lie. “Why are you here? Blackstone is the best and the collaboration makes sense, but don’t tell me it’s a coincidence. There’s no way in the world the fates dropped you back in my family’s distillery.”
He stands. I don’t move.
“You are the best because you’re crooks and thieves.” The words hit the room like something thrown.
I take a step toward him. He doesn’t step back.
“I don’t trust you.”
“I don’t trust you either.”
“Why?” I scoff. “I’m not the one who showed up with a different last name, hair, and eyes.”
“What choice did I have?”
I hold up my index finger. “Skip Blackstone.” My ring finger. “Don’t hide behind the Clark Kent routine.” I lower both and raise my middle finger. “Or you could have fucked off.”
His eyes drop to my mouth instead of my middle finger. My pulse forgets, for one traitorous second, that we’re supposed to be enemies.
