I woke to the sound of heavy footfalls on wood.

Where was I? I sat up as a huge man tromped into my view in woolen socks with an armload of firewood.

The blanket over me fell away, and I realized I was naked. I gasped and yanked the soft downy comforter up to my armpits.

Oh!

I sucked in a breath.

Oh.

Ace’s gallant rescue filtered into my brain in pieces and parts. My lips tried to form words, but all my brain could conjure was, “Wow.”

Or “What?”

“Hey. How do you feel?” Ace glanced over his shoulder as he tossed logs onto the fire and stacked the rest beside it in a neat pile. His dark brows were low over his eyes. His hair was mussed and dusted with snow. His shoulders stretched the flannel shirt he was wearing in the most delicious way. Snowflakes were melting into dots of water across his shoulders.

I’d been rescued by Bearded Hottie.

He’d brought me to his home.

Taken my clothes off.

I gripped the comforter around me and swung my legs off the couch to stand. “Okay. But a little underdressed.” It came out sounding more petulant than I intended.

I knew he hadn’t tried anything. I had a memory of him being infinitely gentle with me as he tried to get me out of my frozen clothes. And they had been frozen. God, I’d never been so cold.

I also remembered him sandwiched behind me in front of the fire, holding me tightly as I shivered and whimpered as the blood returned to my limbs. He’d lifted me onto the couch, then pushed the whole thing–with me on it–closer to the fire.

It was still blazing, so he must have been stoking it all night. The room–and I–were warm and toasty.

He turned, brows down. “Yeah, sorry about that, princess.” Sarcasm rang out in his tone, but his gaze raked over my bare shoulders and took on a hungry look–the same ravenous look I’d seen that first day we’d met when he’d stormed into my office. Like he wanted to devour me whole.

“Next time I find you lost in a blizzard, I’ll leave you in your wet things.”
