Book Blurb:

They say roses are the most beautiful…

Gin Fielding is counting the days until she escapes the small-town life of Roper, Missouri for college at NYU. She prefers to blend in, though she’s far from invisible. But when she protects a younger student from a bully, the spotlight turns on her in ways she never imagined.

I say that every rose has its thorn…

The Friday night lights shine bright on Chase Matthews. Roper’s golden boy, Chase can do no wrong, enjoying the small-town celebrity being the star quarterback brings. When Gin defends his little sister against a bully, he decides to lend her his star power and change her senior year in ways she never imagined.

But maybe the thorns are part of their beauty.

When Gin declines Chase’s invitation to be part of the elite Sweet Sixteen, the repercussions turn both their lives upside down. But amidst the chaos, Gin and Chase find solace in one another. Together, they confront the ugly truth– that sometimes glory has a dark side.

***Warning–Sweet Sixteen is an upper YA book with mature themes and is intended for readers 18+.

My Review:

I was captivated by this story and the wonderful characters. I can see how the theme of the story would be controversial and illicit moral and cultural views on the subject but I would say that it’s very realistic and perhaps a marker of today’s society. Looking past the theme you get to the outstanding characters. In Gin you have a smart, self-assured loner who suffers the bullying with a “who cares, get a life” attitude. She has nothing in common with the small town football obsessed community where she lives and chooses to go her own way. On the other side you have her long-time secret crush and football quarterback golden boy, Chase. After a couple of ill fated events these two get to know each other. Gin’s attempts to enlighten Chase’s views on a longtime school tradition is at the crux their budding relationship and the story. There are so many well written and developed themes at play that makes this an amazing story. This author’s writing is superb and her storytelling is riveting and beautiful. I did have a couple of issues with the story. Where are the couples? Kids this age have girlfriends and boyfriends. And, regardless of the cultural I would think there would be more parental influence. With that being said, overall the story is just terrific mostly because of the spectacular characters, main and secondary. This is a heart wrenching, somewhat tragic tale with moments of beauty about a culture that is detrimental to teens trying to find their place in life and define who they are and will be.
