âExactly what I needed to relax, laugh, and swoon after a hard day. I cannot wait to see what M. Mabie and Aly Martinez come up with next.â
–Carrie Ann Ryan, New York Times Bestselling Author
When the Walls Come Down, an all-new, steamy, swoony, highly entertaining office romance from USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez and M. Mabie is available now!

Did you ever hear the joke about the guy whose wife cheated on him with his best friend? So he quit his job, moved into his parentsâ basement, and gained fifty pounds?
No? Because that wasnât a joke. It was my life.
Four years later, I’m back with a dream job, a killer apartment, and a set of abs that are better than ever.
So, when Maggie Light, a stunning, snarky blonde moves in next door, and we spend the hottest weekend of our lives together, I think this could be the greatest comeback story ever.
That is until I realize Maggie has moved to town to do one thingâsteal my job.
Maybe this isn’t a comeback story after all. Maybe this is warâone I intend to win.
What I never anticipated was that maybe Iâd rather win her.
Perhaps, if Iâm lucky, the universe has finally run out of jokes and I can somehow win both.

Excerpt
Oh, for fuckâs sake. Am I a man or not?
Here goes fucking nothing.
Take a risk, my ass. Iâd fucking show Casey and Blake a damn risk.
I marched down to where she was sitting. âHi, Iâm Shane.â
She looked shocked, maybe a little startled by my approachâand rightly so. Iâd stalked over like the fucking Terminator, all amped up from my private pep talk.
âThe bartender, Chris, said youâre new in town, and itâs your first time here.â
Her sparkling blue eyes stood out against her makeup, and nowâstanding close to herâI could smell her perfume. A subtle and warm scent that made me want to lean in.
What the fuck had I been thinking?
To put it mildly, she was out of my league, but hey⌠Risks, right?
âIf youâre dining alone, would you mind if I offer a suggestion from the menu?â
âI was only looking it over out of curiosity. I really just came in for a drink or two.â She folded it and placed it on the wooden top in front of her.
Goddamn, that cleavage.
âOh. Yeah. Okay. Well, thenâŚuhâŚlet me get one for you.â I might have strutted over like the Terminator, but I was fumbling over my words like Barney Fife and beginning to sweat like a Crossfitter.
Her brows bunched. âUm, you really donât have to do that.â
âPlease. After the day Iâve had, Iâll actually have one with you.â I swiped at the back of my neck. âThe drinks are good here. Very cold. Wet.â Jesus fucking Christ, Shane. Wet!? âUm. Alcoholic, if thatâs what youâre into.â I waved Chrisâand his bigger-than-life shit-eating grinâdown to us.
âFind something youâd like?â he asked her.
âIâll just have a Titos and cranberry,â she answered. âI hear theyâre very cold and wet here.â
Chris looked at me disappointedly, probably guessing at how badly Iâd botched this introduction. He wasnât wrong, but she hadnât told me to fuck off yet.
Yet.
âAnd Iâll take a Honeybee Brown,â I added.
He spun on his heel, shocked. âReally?â
I shrugged and shot daggers at him. âReally. A pint, please.â
âA cold, wet one too, eh? Okay, man. Coming right up.â He made our drinks and then about a dozen more for the servers who were keeping him busy.
âThanks for the drink,â she said, clinking our glasses together, her eyes never quite meeting mine.
âYeah. Sure. No problem.â I followed her lead and took a sip.
âSo, do you come here a lot, Shane?â
My name on her lips had me clearing my throat.
âYes,â replied our asshole bartender before I could answer.
âI live close,â I explained, and she nodded in understanding. âSo, where did you come to the Bay from?â I took another sip, realizing that counting the beer Iâd had with Casey earlier and this one, I was nearing my only-a-few-drinks daily limit. So Iâd be savoring the pint as long as she didnât seem too put off by my dusty-ass small talk. Otherwise, I could chug it down and then be on my merry way, leaving her to enjoy her night without a divorced, practically fired dude bugging her.
âAtlanta,â she replied and swirled a piece of ice with the drink stirrer in her glass. Still no eye contact.
Small talk. I fumbled for more small talk.
âYou have family here?â
âNo, Iâve always wanted to get out of Georgia. So, when I landed a job out here, it seemed like a sign.â
Finally, her blue eyes met mine and⌠Fuck, if I could have just remembered to blink, Iâd have been doing well. I feared if I broke the gaze for just a second, Iâd never see that color again, because surely it was a mirage of some sort. Like a crystal-blue pool in a desert. The kind of trick eyes could only play on a man who hadnât been laid in nearly half a decade.
She finished with, âI start on Monday. I guess fate is as good a time as any to take a risk.â
MY REVIEW:
So many emotions in this absolutely fantastic romance. Swoon-worthy sexiness as the “old man” and his Peach embarked on a ride to love that was awkward and funny and sweet and just wonderful. This writing duo hit a winner with this story. I loved these characters with their real life quirks and issues. Shane was a crazy, fun mess that was instantly memorized by the blonde southern transplant. Maggie is the smart and sexy beauty trying to live a life she thinks her mother would be proud of. This pair hit it off in an uniquely awkward first meet and their chemistry didn’t stop as these two couldn’t stay away from each other. Especially being neighbors and co-workers. Those two things created some of the best and funniest moments in the story. There were heart wrenching moments too that tore my heart to pieces and uplifting ones that made my heart soar. There is a romantic masterpiece with a spectacular couple that pops and sizzles as they trade barbs and quips while being utterly sexy in such a sweet way. Really one of my favorite romances. Terrific secondary characters with both families. And a complete story with a heart-melting epilogue. Lovely, lovely love story! Must read!
