MY FIERY VALENTINE EXCERPT

V opened his eyes to see the sun breaking over the mountains through his window. A smile immediately pulled at his lips. All the worries that had once weighed heavily upon him were gone. He turned his head and looked at his mate. Claire was curled on her side, facing him, one hand under her cheek and the other tucked against her. Her blond hair was spread out behind her against the deep gray sheets.

His heart swelled as he stared at her. She slept peacefully with her lips parted slightly. It still boggled his mind that such a woman could love him. Claire was everything to him, and he made sure that she knew it every day. He wanted to touch her face and feel the soft skin beneath his fingers, but he was loath to wake her. A Dragon King might not need sleep, but humans did.

A sound on the other side of the bed drew his attention. V rose on his elbow to peer over Claire into the bassinet to see his daughter waking. V slid from the bed without waking his mate and hurried to Pearl. He scooped up his bairn, smiling as she gazed up at him with large blue eyes that mirrored his. The fine dusting of hair atop her tiny head was too faint to determine if she would have V’s dark locks or Claire’s fair ones. V couldn’t care less. Pearl would be perfect no matter what coloring she had.

He carefully cradled the infant against him as she reached for his finger. Pearl was still young, but V already knew she far surpassed any other child ever born. He laughed softly to himself, thinking how Claire rolled her eyes every time he said that.

V carried Pearl to the rocking chair and lowered himself into it. He still had a difficult time believing that his child had been born. It wasn’t that humans couldn’t get pregnant from a King, but when two different species tried to procreate, things didn’t usually work out. Most human women miscarried early on in their pregnancies. Only a handful carried a bairn to term—and none of those had ever lived.

Until Pearl.

V didn’t want to think about how Usaeil, a Dark Fae, had used her magic to ensure that Claire became pregnant to hurt V and the rest of the Dragon Kings. For Claire’s entire pregnancy, they had steeled themselves for a miscarriage. As the weeks and months passed and her belly grew, they began to fear that the babe would come—only to be stillborn.

He looked at the bed. Claire had done her best to handle the stress, but it had been too much—even for him. They had leaned on each other as well as the rest of their large family at Dreagan. And, somehow, they had gotten through each day.

However, V had sunk deeper and deeper into gloom as the day of Pearl’s birth loomed. When they located the dragons that had once called Earth home, everyone rejoiced. Everyone, that is, except for him. He couldn’t think of anything but how he and Claire would survive if their child were stillborn.

Constantine, King of Dragon Kings, was the one who’d suggested that V take Claire to Zora. The realm was similar to Earth. The one main difference being the dragons. Claire had been mesmerized by the sight of them, but V had been too focused on her to pay any attention. Con believed that the bairn might have a chance if it were born outside of Earth. And Claire had been up for anything. V hadn’t wanted to refuse her, even though he hadn’t held the same hope as his mate or Con.

When Claire went into labor, V had felt every pain that wracked her body. He was a Dragon King, a being with immeasurable power. And he’d never felt so helpless before. Or useless. Her labor had stretched for hours, and the sight of her losing strength was like a dull blade twisting slowly into his spine. He knew that something was wrong. Everyone did. But no one knew what to do.

Until Brandr, Con and Rhi’s son, stepped forward and laid his hand on Claire’s extended stomach. V still wasn’t sure what had happened. One minute, Claire was screaming in pain, begging him to save their baby. And the next, Pearl was born.

V later learned from Brandr that Usaeil’s magic—the same magic that had created Pearl—had been preventing the bairn’s birth. Usaeil had meant for Pearl to die. Along with Claire. She might be mated to a Dragon King, bound to live as long as V did, but her child’s death would have killed her in other ways. Whatever Brandr had done had saved Claire and Pearl. V knew that to the depths of his soul.

He owed Brandr a debt that could never be repaid.

“You’re frowning again.”

V blinked at the sound of Claire’s voice and stirred. Then he met Claire’s striking brown eyes. “Good morning, beautiful.”

MY REVIEW:

A romantic novella with the Dragon King V and his mate Claire making decisions about their future. With a new baby their lives have changed. Little Pearl is so lucky to have adoring parents plus all the aunts and uncles at Dreagan. I love these fantasy romances with the hunky dragons finding their mates and fighting their enemies. There’s no suspense and danger in this story just pure bliss as the happy couple plans the perfect Valentine Day for each other. After the drama around Pearl’s birth these two fabulous characters deserve happiness. It’s swoon worthy delightful as the plans come together with the help of the others Kings and the mates. Sisters and brothers in every way and I love the glimpses of these other characters. This is a terrific addition to this thrilling series full of love. A quick read with fabulous characters. Loved it!
