At Santa Cruz Central High School, they called them the misfits, the outcasts, the weirdos. But most of us knew them as the Lost Boys…

MY REVIEW:
Emotional, angsty, young love. Childhood best friends to forever love that’s the basis of this story featuring the fabulous couple, Violet and Miller. Violet is a nerdy teen with her future map out as a doctor when the homeless boy stumbles out of the woods and into her heart. Vi is the muse for Miller’s budding songwriting and she mesmerized by the beautiful boy. Their relationship is an angsty love fraught with hidden feelings and mistimed realizations. It takes a while for the two to get on the same page and in the meantime their parents are not very parental. It seems that horrible parents are currently a theme in stories and this one has some doozies. Vi’s parents have a terrible relationship and a secret that isn’t revealed until late in the story and affects Vi’s future. Miller has a mother trying her best but missing the mark and a father that’s MIA. I loved Violet and her relentless passion for knowledge especially the kind that helps Miller with his health issue. She turns from the nerdy young girl into a strong, sweet young woman that reaches for her future with both hands. She’s a terrific heroine. But the star is the poor young musician that writes from a heart that belongs to Violet. He’s a dream hero with his tortured songwriting persona and the school bullying target. Until he befriends the other loners, Ronan and Holden, and the Lost Boys are born. The guys friendship is terrific and I can’t wait for Ronan and Holden stories. Vi best girlfriend, Shiloh, is another fantastic character. This story was a little too angsty for me and there are a lot of elements to the story. I think some were pieces that will fit into future stories but seemed incomplete in this one. This was emotional all the way to the end with the separation of the lovers and Miller’s continued health issues that culminated into a life or death situation. The resolution was interesting and not too much of a surprise. I love this author’s emotional love stories but this one was maybe a little too young for me. It was intensely emotional with a few heartbreaking moments that kept in in suspense. A great start to the Lost Boys series and the hints of what’s to come with Ronan and Holden left me wanting more.
